Diagnostische procedures in de parasitologie

Veel toegepaste diagnostische procedures bij de vaststelling van parasitaire aandoeningen zijn microscopisch onderzoek en kweken. De beste manier om parasieten op te sporen is het microscopisch onderzoek. Hierbij worden de parasieten en hun eitjes of larven onder de microscoop bestudeerd. Bij een kweek wordt het monster in het laboratorium onder gunstige omstandigheden op een geschikte voedingsbodem geplaatst om de parasiet goed te laten gedijen. Dit kan nodig zijn als het monster niet genoeg parasieten bevat om met de microscoop op te sporen. Gewoonlijk wordt voor microscopisch onderzoek en kweken gebruik gemaakt van bloed- of ontlastingmonsters.

De parasieten kunnen ook worden geïdentificeerd aan de hand van moderne methoden als serologisch onderzoek en moleculaire technieken. Serologisch onderzoek helpt stoffen (antistoffen) op te sporen die door het lichaam worden aangemaakt ter verdediging tegen de parasieten. Met moleculaire technieken kan het genetische materiaal van de parasieten worden geïdentificeerd.
